Action 7: Tests and Treatment

7. Describe best options for tests and treatment: Knowledge about clinical and cost effectiveness of tests and treatments can help women and men make appropriate decisions.

In any clinical setting, the focus should be on appropriate investigations and treatment. Over the years, availability of technology has been the driver for the introduction of a number of interventions, some of which are unproven. Knowledge of the effectiveness and cost of these interventions can help care providers and patients make the right clinical decisions. Existing national and professional society guidelines have identified core tests/treatments, as well as others that are optional, but whether interventions are worthwhile will be influenced by personal and societal values. Patients should have enough information from their providers to determine which treatments are most appropriate.
